Hygiene Visits

Hygiene

Your regular hygiene appointment focuses on examining for signs of oral diseases, providing treatment and carrying out preventative dental care. This plays a core role in oral healthcare, gum health and overall health. Showing people individualized at-home oral care to help keep the teeth and gums healthy is an important part of our care. Dental hygienists work closely with dentists to meet the specific needs of patients also.

Our hygiene visits involve:

  • Patient screening procedures, including a comprehensive assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting, and evaluation of gum disease

  • Taking, developing and interpreting dental radiographs (x-rays)

  • Professional teeth cleaning including tooth scaling and tooth polishing and debridement to remove calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth

  • Applying preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides)

  • Administering local anaesthetic and/or analgesia

  • Educating patients on appropriate oral hygiene techniques to maintain oral health, such as tooth brushing and flossing

  • Counseling patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health

  • Making impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs)

  • Performing in-office teeth whitening procedures
