Fillings

When discussing the plan for your teeth, we will give you advice on and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of filling material to allow you to make an informed decision. The best type for you will depend on the size of the filling, where it is in your mouth and cost.

Your Choices

Resin Composite (Plastic)

Composite fillings are undoubtedly one of the most commonly placed of fillings. They have an average life of 2-12 years, are tooth-coloured, have a moderate cost, are best-used in small-to-medium-size restorations, and are placed in one appointment only.

Ceramic Indirect

Ceramic indirect are generally our most recommended choice for filling material. They have an average life of 10-15 years, are tooth-coloured, have a moderate-high initial cost, are best in moderate-sized restorations and require two-appointments to place.

Gold Inlays and Onlays

Though we avoid using gold in visible areas of the mouth, gold is still one of the most successful dental materials. They have an average life of 10-15 years, are gold in colour, have a moderate-high initial cost, are best in moderate-sized restorations in teeth that are not visible in the smile and require two-appointments to place.

Silver Amalgam

Amalgam has been used for approximately 160 years and is the most researched and best understood material in dentistry. They have an average life of 2-12years, are metal-coloured, have a moderate cost, are best-used in small-to-medium-size restorations in back teeth, and are placed in one appointment only. Use of mercury in the body has been criticized since its inception, but amalgam use is still supported strongly by the American Dental Association and other groups worldwide.

Glass Ionomer

Glass Ionomer is a weak material, generally used for fillings on children’s teeth and as a temporary filling material. It contains fluoride so it can be a great material to use on patients with a lot of decay. Its average life is 2-8 years, is tooth-coloured, is best used for small fillings on back teeth in low stress areas and is placed in one appointment only.

Crown

Crowns are more predictable than any other option for moderate to large restorations.
